The tour is over and I'm back home in San Francisco. My friend Jeff Palmer likens this strange transition period to "getting off a moving sidewalk." Yes, that'll do. But sometimes I think of Martin Sheen waiting for his next mission in Apocalypse Now....

What an amazing tour! We played songs out in a dusty parking lot, on top of a souped-up Dodge, had my Mom on stage in Chapel Hill, and welcomed guest singers and players all tour. In Phoenix, I stopped the show for 15 minutes trying to get a Domino's cheese pizza delivered to the venue. They kept hanging up as they could hear 150 people trying to be quiet. Eventually we got one, and 30 minutes later Al came with our XL pizza, we got him on stage and tipped him $200+.

All of these ideas came from the true mastermind of the tour, my band mate Dave Douglas. He played drums, keyboards, bass pedals and sampler, sometimes all at once. He is a genius.

And Annie, wow. What a pleasure it is to be around her. Annie Clark is St Vincent, she played with us the entire tour. I expected her to be amazing and she was, every night, but I also got hooked on hanging out with Annie. I miss you A-1!!

And thanks to Dave from Brooklynvegan, who let Annie and I post tour updates.

I'm in the back bench of our Chevy van, listening to Joe Frank as we speed down I-44 to Tulsa. There's a lime green spider climbing up the dangling seat belt in front of me. He's searching for food or a place to rest, or maybe just exploring his strange new environment. Well don't worry my friend, there's Kashi bar crumbs on the carpet, and all kinds of strange places to hide in here...

Okay we're working VERY hard on the fall US and EU tours... A few notes:
Dear Canada, we love you, and if border guards (on both sides) weren't douchebags, we'd see you every tour. See you in September.
-
Dear Fla, how could I forget you? I am your son! We have 4 Florida shows on the next US tour.
-
Dear Dublin, if we can make it happen, we'll be there.
-
Minneapolis, Norman, Cleveland, and Atlanta, we'll see you in the fall!

We have a day off! Wow, a week into the tour and I'm layed out... BTW, if you don't come to the shows early and drink in the loveliness of St. Vincent, you are clinically insane and one step away from the madhouse. Here's some links cataloging our very collective approach to music making.

Craig Ness sang a wonderful "Letter to the East Coast" at the Doug Fir last night. Of course he was nervous (so am I, every night) but once the song started the crowd went nuts. And remember, this is more about heart than anything else. If you haven't sang outside your apartment, much less on stage, then you're perfect. So keep the emails coming, this is very exciting for Dave and I. We want singers at every show.
------
4 6 07
Cool, it's working! Keep sending me emails about playing bass and singing. Some cities are covered (Boston, Chicago, Seattle, Portland, Athens, OH). In Chicago we have Sarah Schuh (pronounced "Shu") singing "Dear Sarah Shu." We're looking for more symmetry like that. Tonight we have Larry Crane from Tape Op on bass!
------
4 5 07
First off, yes of course I'm serious about people playing bass and singing with us! But due to the overwhelming response, please get a confirmation from me so we don't have five bass players at a show (although...). So, email me and I'll confirm.

Also, please learn My Old Flame in the key of A, not A flat like it is on the record.

If you want to sing LEAD VOCALS on a song for our upcoming tour, please find us before the show and we'll bring you on stage. Try to learn 2 songs in case we don't know the one you do:) It'll be like Vanderslice Idol. Also, if you want to play bass, bring it (don't worry about the amp) and learn either 424 or My Old Flame. It'll be a free for all.

Hello!! Okay soooo much news...
Some asshole hacked my myspace account and spammed A LOT of people on my friends list with some spyware scam. I AM SORRY!!! We know myspace sucks, but man they don't give a shit about patching up security holes. The same thing happened to Spinto Band and it'll happen tons more in the next month. So get ready to get fun comments from your favorite bands!!! Oh, and change your passsword often!

We're almost on tour!!! Dave and I are rehearsing like fiends. Btw, I'll be posting photos and a tour diary on Brooklyn Vegan. Annie from St. Vincent will be singing some songs with us. Exciting! Okay, no more exclamation marks...

Two new photo slide shows and the Scott Solter remix record will go up tomorrow. The remix record is *beautiful*, and I can say that because I didn't have anything to do with it. It's all the brilliance of Solter. It'll hit the front page.

1 11 07 | Killcare Beach, New South Wales
Peter Hughes and I decided to stay on after the end of the Mountain Goats/JV Australia tour. This was a hella smart move. We're at the Trigg family beach house, two hours north of Sydney. Anna and Bob lovingly tour managed for us and, in the kind-as-hell Aussie spirit, have let us stay an extra week.
--
The house stands between two national parks on some of the most beautiful coastline I've ever seen. You can see the Tasmin Sea from the deck...A few minutes ago we had a Magpie, Cockatoo, King Parrot, and the hilarious Kookaburra all lined up on the railing looking for handouts. We doled out, of course.
------
1 4 07 | Killcare Beach, New South Wales
I held a wombat in my arms, kissed a kangaroo on his soft tufted head, fed a wallaby grass I pulled from the lawn, laughing as his teeth tapped against my palm. I watched the Ashes, asking Bob and Anna for insight, strategy, clues. I appreciated the StumpCam and the Snick-o-Meter. A Gyspy Joker asked me for a light. I had a date and tahini smoothie at Tropicana. (It was the best smoothie of my life) I sang backup on "Half Dead," and watched John and Peter slay 4,000 at Falls Festival. I swam at Muggs Creek, saw a gallah, trudged through hopsead and wild bougainvillea, and walked the Perth Botanical Gardens. I witnessed the hook turn.

12 1 06 | Paris, FR
The EU/UK tour is over! What a wonderful way to spend the fall, it seems now to be a beautiful blur of cathedrals, kind and thoughtful people, and backstage catering like you wouldn't believe. I think we got looser and had more fun than on any other tour: we had the entire crowd on stage in Oslo and Ian and I managed to take off our clothes in Manchester. We'll be back here in October '07.
I've stayed on in Paris with Kung Fu Master Isa Fix. For two weeks, we've haunted the halls of Napoleon III Apartments, the bridges over the Seine, and eaten every variation of the baked treat known as "Apple Slippers." And still I can't wait to get home to San Francisco...

10 19 06 | Antwerp, BE
Holy shit, has the US gone positively loopy since we left 5 days ago? Colby, Ney, Foley (and the priest!), Sen. Larry Craig and then... Bush accepting the Iraq-Vietnam comparison! Well, all of this seems very far away from the Grote Markt of Antwerp, where I'm leeching wireless from the chocalatier next door. People here aren't paying much attention to our mess. Belgium has problems of its own, with tensions between Walloon French and the Flemish-speaking Flamands, and an emerging far-right Vlaams Belang party that almost seized power here in yesterday's election. That the VB has connections to violent far-right cells leaves this American surprised and sad. Antwerp is heaven on earth, as far as I can tell.
--
So here we are on our third EU tour in a year. I could get very used to this. The shows have been fantastic and the clubs, promoters, and hotel keepers couldn't be sweeter. And sweet is the name of the game. I'm teaching a class at Trix tonight about production at the recording school here. Tomorrow night we play here with Jel. Ian and I played on Studio Brussel, the national station here today. I'll post a song soon!

We're trying to play everything live and keep things very simple. We're failing on both counts. It's been an incredible start, we're almost finished with three songs with there's more in the pipeline. We'll be tracking all fall in between touring Europe and Australia. Concord, NH
After a glorious swing through Canada, we're ready for the east coast. Free wireless is plentiful, cell phones are back on, and the odd loonie dropped into that secret pouch of my backpack that holds 5 lbs of foreign coins. We're in Concord, NH at a Courtyard, sitting in the restaurant eating our own homemade granola, drinking our own tea. The bill was $1.51. We went fairly crazy in the pool last night, throwing chairs into the deep end and doing naked cannonballs. But even we understand the cultural obligations of a monday morning, we're all showered and dressed, typing furiously on our iBooks, quiet as any other traveling salesman in the lobby.

Yes this tour is without question the best yet. What would we do without you? We're on a seriously dangerous highway to Cleveland, then on to Canada! Tomorrow we have a day off in Toronto. We need it: we've been playing 21-22 songs a night, having intense problems with our gear and enduring brutal early AM van calls.
------
4 8 06
Damn, if the rest of shows are anything like the top of this tour, this will be the best one yet. Vancouver and Seattle were stellar, I'm excited we're playing so much in Canada this tour. And yes we will come to Edmonton, I promise!

It's been very hectic and inspiring couple of days. We played in Dresden on thursday, and then drove after the show through the Ore Mountains to Prague on a treacherous road with snowbanks 12 feet high. I woke up early to shoot a couple of rolls of the city center. Holy shit. I'm still trying to make sense of how wonderful that place is. I fell asleep on the way to Austria only to wake up in the heart of Vienna. We're playing tonight in Munich, at a club on the banks of the Isar.

Heidelberg, Germany
I wasn't expecting the flood of emails the previous post generated. Some of the most interesting and nuanced came from the Middle East and SE Asia. One point I'd like to be clear on: I strongly believe the main agitator of Muslim radicalism is Bush's reckless foreign policy, which seems to have a lot more to do with some unknowable Biblical subtext than with resource "management" and strategic philosophies (heartland theory, etc.) Okay, no angry emails about this!! That's all the armchair politics you'll get from me for while...Btw, I am deeply appreciative that anyone reads this site or cares what I say.
